Forklift Licence2 Comments
In the UK, not everybody knows, there is actually no such thing as a forklift licence. Instead, what you get is a forklift truck certification. You can obtain a forklift truck certificate by training at one of the many forklift training centres in the UK.
There are however many different types of forklift certifications and depending on where you want to work you will need to make sure you do the right training to get that certificate.
Take note that just because you have been trained for a certain forklift, it DOES NOT mean you can operate any type of forklift.
Even though you will not actually obtain an actual forklift licence (but a certificate like discussed above) for this article we will call it a forklift licence.
The start to getting your forklift truck licence
The good thing about training for a forklift licence is that within days you can be trained to a high standard where you will be confident on the forklift truck in all conditions and situations.
All forklift truck training centres are different one way or another but the majority of them start off with some basic theory lessons. This is where you can learn how the forklift works and what techniques you may encounter.
Being in a class room environment you are able to ask as many questions as you want to get the information needed.
Forklift health and safety
One of the most important things to learn when your training to get your forklift licence is the health and safety part. Even the smallest of forklifts weigh well over a tone and the last thing you or anybody else wants is any sort of accident. Read our forklift health and safety page to make sure you are up to scratch on everything.
Forklift practical test
To get your forklift licence you will need to do some sort of test to prove what you have learned. Each training centre is different but you will need to demonstrate one way or another that what you have been taught you have understood. This again is an important part to obtaining your forklift licence, as you will need to be confident at all times when you are in control of a forklift.
How often will you need to refresh you forklift licence?
There is no actual law saying that you have to do a refreshers course every x amount of years. A lot of people will advise you to do one every 3 years or so, but it is really up to the employer. If the employer thinks there are some areas you have to improve on then they might recommend doing so with a forklift refreshers course.
So you know what is involved to get a forklift licence, but you need to know which licence to go for. Like mentioned at the beginning of this page, you will need to know what course is right for you depending on what type of forklift job you want.
Below is a quick description of the different types of the most common forklift trucks. To read a more detailed view of the different types of forklifts please click here.
Different types of forklift licences
Industrial reach forklift trucks
Theses are the most common forklifts known in warehouses. They are perfect for getting to high storage areas where warehouses quite often stack pallets high.
You can get different types of reach forklift trucks and they are all brilliant for different type of working environments.
Stand up trucks are probably the most popular. With the front two forks being able to slide straight under pallets, make this forklift truck perfect for loading pallets from one area to another, in a safe and easy manner.
Double deep trucks are quite like stand up trucks, but on the front they have longer forks. As you can imagine this will make lifting pallets for storage a lot easier as the forks are able to reach areas that the stand up truck can’t, such as right at the back of the bay in the warehouse.
Straddle trucks like double deep trucks also have long forks at the font, but also able to grip the edges of the pallets for extra stability. This comes in handy when you are trying to reach a pallet at a strange angle.
Industrial Counterbalance Forklifts
Quite often you will see industrial counterbalance forklifts being used in big stores and warehouses.
They can also work brilliantly outdoors, but only really on flat and smooth surfaces.
If you need to be working in very tight spaces then the three wheel model will be fine as, having the three wheels gives it better manoeuvrability.
Industrial side loader forklifts
If you need a forklift to work in tight, narrow spaces, then the side loader forklift is the right forklift for the job. As the forks are located on the side of the forklift it makes it easy to load and transport sheet, tubing and pipe materials.
Telescopic handler forklifts
Telescopic handler forklifts are perfect for large building and construction sites. Depending on what model truck, they are able to have a different reach, but they can save time and money for lifting and transporting heavy materials.
For example. If you had to lift a heavy steel joist from the ground to the top of the roof, it would take a lot of workmen and a lot of time. This is where a telescopic handler forklift would come in and save you a lot of time and effort.
Rough terrain forklift trucks
When you need a forklift to work well in difficult conditions outside, the best forklift for the job is a rough terrain forklift truck.
These types of forklift trucks have large tyres with thick threads to cope with rough grounds. They are ideal for transporting heavy materials across difficult grounds where other forklifts would struggle.
